Here are fun some Civil War hands-on activities that you can do with your kids while doing a Civil War unit study:
- Attend a Civil War re-enactment
- Create a Civil War Notebook
- Make a Confederate Flag
- Create a Civil War timeline
- Bake some Civil War treats
- Recite the Gettysburg Address while dressed up as Lincoln
- Build Civil War scenes in LEGO
- Re-enact the Underground Railroad in skits or with action figures on a map
- Listen to music from the Civil War time period
- Bake treats for Civil War soldiers
- Sew a Civil War period costume
- Read classic literature from the Civil War time period
- Go on field trips to battle grounds, visit Ford’s Theater, look at Civil War museum artifacts, etc.
- Visit a local graveyard to do a crayon rubbing from the Civil War time period
- Create a Civil War newspaper
These hands-on Civil War activities will help your students to bring this time period to life! Experiencing the Civil War first hand by tasting the food, hearing the music, and watching the re-enacted battles will be like traveling through time. Your students will have no problem remembering what you are teaching them when they are able to live and breathe the Civil War, hanging all the other information you teach into their experiential knowledge. We really enjoyed our Civil War unit study!

A wonderful round up! When my Littles get a little older I think this would be fun to do with them 🙂
Oh, it was super fun!
I love Civil War music – even have a couple of collections of the song books (reproductions from Dover Publications). So many great things to do in regards to learning about the Civil War (but it is my favorite time period to study/teach).
Anything like music that is hands-on can help kids to internalize the time period and get a flavor for what life was like back then.
