The Importance of Silence in Prayer

In our society, there is so much noise. We have saturated our lives with noise from the radio, from TVs blaring, from social media, from endless other streams of noise. The constant noise and running from one place to another has crowded out our lives so much that there is no longer silence. Silence is the place where you can hear God.

If you have no silence in your life, it is not possible for you to hear God. You must reduce your noise pollution. We need to be pro-active in seeking silence and resting in silence before the Lord.

The Importance of Silence in Prayer (Video #10)

When you are praying, make sure you allow time for silence before God, just to be in His presence. This is especially true when you need wisdom from God, or you are meditating on a Scripture that you want to become real in your life. You will not be able to process spiritual things unless you relax in the presence of God in silence, in an un-rushed state. You will maximize your spiritual growth if you allow yourself to abide in silence before the Lord.

God ministers to me through prayer in the midst of silence. Silence is my favorite part of prayer because it is peaceful. I am seeking to connect with the Lord. It is sweet.

Sometimes His presence, just who He is–the fruit of the Spirit–is all you need. You get filled up with God Himself in the silence. More of God in my life is usually the answer to all my prayers. I become who I’m supposed to be. This is why Jesus says that if we ask for a loaf of bread, He will give us what we need, and He later says that what we really need is the Holy Spirit’s fresh filling, which He grants to those who ask (Matthew 7:9-11; Luke 11:11-13).

  1. Terri says:

Silence so God can speak to us…to much noise going on in the world

  2. Erin says:

This has been on my mind lately, funny or not, because my son cannot shut his mouth. He also is fascinated with hearing from God. So, I’ve been repeatedly telling him that how can he ever hear from God if you never slows down and sit in the quiet. I’m also reminding myself of that as I said to him!

  3. Andrea says:

That’s something that I am still working on – being silent before God

  4. I’ve had to travel a lot this past month, and I missed my silence. It seemed the only time I had silence was when I went to sleep or waiting to be picked up. I’m thankful for the Bible app on my phone, so I could have a reading plan, but there is nothing better than allowing God to pour His Presence over you like a sweet smelling perfume.

Our modern lives are so full of busy-ness and noise that very few people even think to take time in silence before the Lord, in case God wants to convict us, prompt us to do something, or minister to us in some way.

  5. Stillness is crucial for hearing God’s voice but so is worship and service. We have to be willing to listen over the noise but take time to be still and quiet still.

  6. Very good presentation!

I love the part in your video about not rushing through and just spilling our guts when we approach God. Reminds me of this passage:

Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words.

It is so important that we lay all our outside thoughts aside and prepare to talk to God. After all, we are talking to a King…THE KING OF KINGS! He deserves our undivided attention. Noise pollution out = God in. Recipe for a great prayer life!

  7. Kristi says:

Wow! Susan, we have been thinking a like lately. I’ve been dwelling on this idea of noise pollution for a bit now. It is amazing how we get so accustomed to the noise in our life that we find it difficult to do without it and concentrate on Christ. We have to allow Christ devotes time without the intrusion on noise so we can hear him! Love this!!

    • Susan says:

Thanks! The noise from social media. TV, and busy-ness in general drowns out the quiet voice of God, so we have to be pro-active in taking moments of silence before the Lord.

Your post reminds me of this verse, “Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.” – Ecclesiastes 5:2. We don’t need to rush into prayer with all our requests. It’s good to be silent or to read the Word and let God speak to us. It may change what we were originally planning to say to Him.
